When babies are born

Graph below shows that most of my friends have birthdays in late fall or in March. There is also an increasing trend in birthdays from May to November. Kind of interesting assuming that most babies are born 9 month after conception :P

  1. November I understand, but March? Nice blog title, by the way!

  2. So there are not as many conceptions in the summer months... That is consistent with research done by Buckles and Hungerman: those conceived during the summer months tend to be worse off on every measure, from health to teenage pregnancy to academic achievement. The academic achievement part explains how not as many summer conceptions made it into your social circle. There are several explanations for the seasonality. One might be termed the "prom effect" - a disproportionate number of summer conceptions are out of wedlock high school conceptions. Another is that the fetus is particularly vulnerable to influenza during certain trimesters, and influenza is highly seasonal.

  3. my simple guess will be that more conceptions occur during winter - when people spend more time indoors. Recently one Asian country - i think now it was South Korea - started giving it's workers half a day off once a week in order to increase their population :-)

  4. Interesting...it would be interesting to stratify the day based on people who considers themselves to be introverts vs extroverts...I wonder if there will be any patterns there...or by ethnicity...
